Summer Wellness Guide 2026: Energy, Hydration and Supplements for Bradford Families

Summer in Bradford means longer days, backyard BBQs, family road trips, and kids running around outdoors. It also means new stressors on your body: heat, sun exposure, dehydration, disrupted routines, and bug bites. At WellnessRX Pharmacy, Phillip Kim (Pharmacist) and Nancy Tran (RHN) have put together a practical summer wellness guide to keep you and your family feeling great all season long.
Hydration: More Than Just Water
Most Canadians underestimate how much fluid they lose in summer heat. Sweating depletes not just water but electrolytes — sodium, potassium, magnesium, and chloride — which are essential for energy, muscle function, and brain performance.
Nancy's summer hydration tips:
Aim for 2.5-3L of water daily in summer heat
Add a pinch of sea salt and lemon to water for natural electrolytes
Consider a quality electrolyte supplement — avoid sugar-heavy sports drinks
Eat water-rich foods: cucumbers, watermelon, berries, leafy greens
Vitamin D: Yes, Even in Summer
It sounds counterintuitive, but many Canadians are still Vitamin D deficient in summer. Sunscreen (which we absolutely recommend), cloud cover, and limited sun exposure mean most people don't produce enough from sunlight alone. Nancy recommends continuing Vitamin D3 supplementation year-round — 1000-2000 IU daily for most adults.
Omega-3s for Summer Skin and Inflammation
More sun and outdoor activity means more oxidative stress on the skin and joints. Omega-3 fatty acids (EPA and DHA) support healthy skin barrier function, reduce inflammation from sun exposure, and support joint comfort for active summer lifestyles. Look for a high-quality fish oil with at least 500mg combined EPA+DHA per serving.
Probiotics for Summer Gut Health
Summer travel, barbecues, new foods, and disrupted routines can wreak havoc on your gut. A daily probiotic helps maintain microbiome balance and supports immune resilience — critical when you're exposed to more people, different environments, and off-schedule eating.
Bug Bites, Sunburns, and Skin Support
Phillip recommends keeping your summer first-aid kit stocked with:
Zinc oxide cream — soothes sunburns and minor skin irritations
Quercetin or Vitamin C — natural antihistamine support for seasonal allergies and insect reactions
Aloe vera gel — for after-sun skin relief
Magnesium spray — for muscle cramps after outdoor activities
Energy and Adrenal Support for a Busy Summer
More social commitments, later nights, and disrupted sleep can exhaust your adrenals. Nancy recommends:
B-Complex: critical for sustained energy production
Adaptogenic herbs (Ashwagandha, Rhodiola): support the body's stress response
Iron (if deficient, especially for menstruating women): fatigue in summer heat is often iron-related
Nutrition for Summer Energy
Nancy's summer plate formula:
Half the plate: colourful vegetables and fruit (high in antioxidants to combat sun exposure)
Quarter: quality protein (salmon, chicken, legumes) to support muscle repair
Quarter: complex carbohydrates (quinoa, brown rice, sweet potato) for sustained energy
Plus: healthy fats (avocado, olive oil, nuts) for skin health and satiety
