What Ontario Pharmacists Can Now Treat — And What Still Needs a Doctor

In this WellnessRX Pharmacy guide, we break down what your pharmacist may be able to help with, when pharmacist prescribing can save you a walk-in clinic visit, and which red flags still need a doctor or urgent medical care. Because the right care starts with knowing where to go first.
Since Ontario expanded the minor ailment prescribing program in 2023 — and again in July 2026 to include 28 conditions — a lot of patients have asked me the same question: what exactly does this mean, and does it apply to what I'm dealing with right now?
The honest answer is that it applies to more situations than most people realize, and the ones it doesn't apply to are pretty clearly defined.
The Short Version
Ontario pharmacists can now assess and prescribe treatment for 28 common conditions without you needing a doctor's visit. No referral, no appointment through a family doctor's office, and in most cases no cost for the assessment itself.
What We Can Treat
The full list of 28 is on our pharmacist prescribing page, but here are the ones that come in most often at WellnessRX:
Urinary Tract Infections — specifically uncomplicated cystitis in non-pregnant adult women. If you have typical UTI symptoms and no fever or flank pain, we can assess and prescribe an antibiotic the same visit. Full details in our UTI treatment guide.
Acne (mild) — comedones and limited inflammatory lesions qualify. We can prescribe topical retinoids, topical antibiotics, and benzoyl peroxide combinations. More at our acne treatment page.
Conjunctivitis (Pink Eye) — a very common one. Most cases are viral and don't need antibiotics, but we assess which type and prescribe appropriately where needed. See our pink eye guide.
Cold Sores (Herpes Labialis) — this one is time-sensitive. Antivirals work best in the first 24-72 hours of a cold sore appearing, so this is one of the cases where same-day pharmacist prescribing has a real clinical advantage over waiting for a doctor's appointment. Our cold sore guide covers the urgency window.
Seasonal Allergies — prescription-strength antihistamines and nasal corticosteroids, not just the OTC options. Full details at our seasonal allergy page.
Tick Bites and Lyme Prophylaxis — if you've been bitten by a tick in a high-risk area, there's a narrow window where a single-dose antibiotic (doxycycline) significantly reduces Lyme disease risk. We can assess eligibility and prescribe. Details at our tick bite assessment guide.
Nine newly added conditions as of July 2026 include dry eye disease, ringworm, jock itch, head lice, warts, dandruff, nasal congestion, calluses and corns, and tension-type headache.
What Still Needs a Doctor
Minor ailment prescribing has real scope limits — and they're important. Conditions that require referral or aren't within scope include:
Complicated infections (fever, systemic spread, pregnancy-related UTIs)
Cystic or scarring acne
Recurring or treatment-resistant conditions
Anything where your symptoms suggest something more serious underlying the surface presentation
If you come in and your symptoms don't qualify for in-pharmacy prescribing, we tell you clearly and refer you to the right next step — rather than treating something that needs more investigation.
What to Expect During an Assessment
Walk in or book online. You'll have a private consultation where I review your symptoms, your current medications, and your health history relevant to the condition. If you qualify, a prescription is issued and — if we're filling it — your medication is ready the same visit. If you don't qualify, you leave with clarity on where to go next rather than having wasted a day in a walk-in clinic queue first.
The entire assessment is funded for eligible Ontario residents. You may still pay for the prescribed medication depending on your drug plan.
Booking
Walk-ins are welcome. For conditions with time-sensitive windows — cold sores especially — calling ahead is worth it. You can also book online at any time, or reach us at 905-775-7874.
